Pelling – the beauty

Pelling is situated at West Sikkim at an altitude of 7200 feet. The primary attraction is close range view of the Kanchenjunga. This green town has attracted a lot of tourists over time and one of the most visited places in West Sikkim.



Best time to be in Pelling  

Summer is the best know season to visit Pelling. Weather becomes very comfortable during March to June. Clear skyline helps the breathtaking view of Kanchenjunga from Pelling during this period.

How to reach Pelling

Train: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the nearest railway station. Reserve a cab to Pelling from there. The journey from NJP to Pelling usually takes around 6 hours by road.

Flight: Bagdogra is the nearest airport. Pelling bound taxis can be found just out of airport gate.

Journey to Pelling: It is a long narrow winding beautifully decorated way. The natural vegetation steep and rugged hills soothe our eyes. Geyzing is the nearest taxi stand, from where you need to travel further north to reach Pelling.

Pelling — The experience

You can choose to stay in either upper or lower part of Pelling. Hotels with a wide range of affordability can be found at both places. Advance hotel booking is preferable here as normally you will be arriving at evening time. Not a much of activity you could do here at evening time. So plan your trips accordingly starting from early morning time.

Try to book your room facing Kanchenjunga pick (Highest in India) of Himalayas, should be visible from the window/balcony of the room. View of first light on the pick while sipping coffee from your morning bed is a heavenly feeling.  The moment rejuvenates inner self and prepares you for the entire day trip.

Kanchenjunga Falls 

It’s around 20 KMs from Pelling town this giant waterfall is a must visit for nature lovers. All around water mist makes the experience more enjoyable. Nice place to have memorable clicks, good lights can be an add-on.

Khechiperi Lake

Holy wish fulfilling lake as per Buddhists situated around 34 KMs from Pelling town. Hills surrounding the lake makes the view exclusive. Swans can be seen playing and floating throughout the lake. There is a narrow wooden bridge which will take you to near the lake and have a glimpse of holy water. Will cherish the experience for a lifetime.

Singshore Bridge

It’s a long Suspended bridge joining two gorges of West Sikkim. Downwards view covers beautiful sight of waterfalls and green hillside. This is also a second highest bridge in Asia. A walk till the end of the bridge and then again coming back to the start point the with your family/friends can be a great experience altogether. Again a great place to have some nice clicks.

Pemayangtse Monastery

Situated 6 KMs from Pelling town this is one of oldest and premier Tibetian monasteries of Sikkim can also be referred as adobe of peace. Rimbi Falls

This one is another waterfall which may be a part of your itinerary.  Good one but similar falls can be found in the road of your journey.

There are other places like Rabdentse ruins, Rock Garden, Changey waterfall can be covered as quick stops.

Best idea on an evening in Pelling is to relax and gossip/organize events with family/friends. Other ideas can include having a nice walk around the town. Cool breeze at hilly road brings at dark evening does make you feel the mother nature.

Next day morning spend some time with the glittering peak of Kanchenjunga, which will mesmerize you again and again. It’s tough to bid goodbye to a heavenly place like Pelling, the experience will cherish for the lifetime.

Suggestions while in Pelling
  •  Carry enough amount of cash to Pelling. There are around 3-4 ATMs in the town but those are not always in working state.
  • As mentioned above, always try to book a room facing to India’s highest pick. It’s a must.
  • Winter wears are necessary here at any season. Check the weather before you start for Pelling is always a good idea.
  •  There are a lot of restaurants around the town, can try out different cuisines for lunch. Having dinner at the hotel or nearby restaurant is advisable here.
  • Not a very good place for your shopping needs, save it for other places can be a good idea.
